RE: [Autism Society of Southern Arizona] Resources for new diagnosis

Hi Amy,

Thanks for posting and looking for options for families!  The Autism Society of Southern Arizona has grown significantly and has started (or will be implementing very soon) new programs that may be able to help support this family.  We have many new exciting programs at the ASSA, but here are a few that might be beneficial for the family you know:

·         Parent's Night Out – this is a new social program (very informal) for parents to get out and network with other families, professionals, or ASSA board members.  Parents can get information about autism, or just go out for the night to meet other parents in their situation.

·         Autism Source – this is on an online national database that is updated by the Autism Society of Southern Arizona.  It's a great tool that allows individuals to search for local services/providers.  See attached website:  http://www.autismsource.org/.  (As an example, when I search the keyword 'habilitation', enter my zip code [85755] and 'within 25 miles', it brings up 42 providers with phone, address, website, and other info.)

·         Professional Speakers Series – this is a new series of workshops put on by experts in our community to provide educational literature and information to families.  We have one next Saturday, March 21st!

·         Play Dates – this is a new program that will be rolling out soon.  Many parents have expressed interest over the years in having play dates for their children, so we're collecting information on geographic location and ages of children.  For any family interested, I suggest contacting the Autism Society of Southern Arizona by phone (770-1541) or e-mail (info@as-az.org) and providing your information.

·         ASSA Office Support – this family can always call our office and the Autism Society of Southern Arizona will help in any way possible.

I highly recommend that this family attend the Autism Walk on Saturday, April 11th at Kino Sports Complex.  Our Resource Fair will have 50 exhibitors providing information on a range of services.  Register at www.as-az.org.  I hope this helps!

Subject: [Autism Society of Southern Arizona] Resources for new diagnosis

Hi all,

I recently met a mother whose 2.5 year old son was just diagnosed with autism. She also has a younger child. My son is older and we moved here several years ago from a different state so I am not as aware of resources here for new diagnoses. She is looking for support groups and opportunities to meet other parents of younger children who can identify with what she is going through.

If anyone can respond to me with ideas for her, or if you would even like to share contact info that I could pass on to her, I would really appreciate it. They are a sweet and wonderful family.

Thank you, Amy
